After a tumultuous nightlife and a glass more, most people will end up in a fast food restaurant.
However, some people do not tolerate alcohol well, so it is not uncommon for a fight to break out. In order to prevent such situations, several McDonald’s restaurants across Europe have started using classical music to calm their drunken customers.
McDonald’s was the first to introduce classical music in restaurants in Glasgow, Scotland, especially Bach and Mozart, so that all guests would behave in a civilized manner, even though they were drunk. This principle has been adopted by other McDonald’s restaurants in England, and incidents have drastically decreased ever since.
– “We tested the effects that classical music has and found that it calms people down. In some locations, we play classical music from the early evening hours till closing time, and in restaurants that are open 24/7 the sounds of classical music can be heard throughout the night.” – McDonald’s chairman said.
The positive effects of these musical tones were also determined by a scientific study by Dr. Kevin Laber from Duke University, which proved that listening to classical music releases dopamine secretion and reduces stress hormone levels, and therefore has an effect on people to behave calmer and be more relaxed. This applies to drunken people, too.
